Our History

As the leading out-of-school youth development organization in our region, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater New Haven was created on July 1, 2022, with the merger of the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven and Ulbrich Boys & Girls Clubs.

For many years, these legacy clubs independently provided outstanding youth development programs and services to their respective communities. Combining their strengths and resources allows the new organization to make an even bigger difference for children, teens, families, and communities.

One of the first Clubs in the history of the movement, the Boys Club of New Haven was founded in 1871 across the street from the New Haven Green. Almost 100 years later, in 1970, the New Haven Club became the Boys & Girls Club, one of the first in the nation to welcome girls and young women.

Throughout the decades, the home of the Club spanned the City – including Orange Street, Jefferson Street, and Grand Avenue. Many grownup former Club kids share fond memories of the former Clubhouse at the corner of Sargent Drive and Hallock Avenue. Since 1989, the New Haven Clubhouse has been located at 253 Columbus Avenue in the Hill neighborhood.

The Boys Club of Wallingford was founded in 1963 by a group of dedicated citizens. In 1995, in honor of Fred Ulbrich Jr., the Boys & Girls Club of Wallingford officially changed its name to the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club. In 2019, the Club expanded its operations to serve children, youths, and families from North Haven.
