3rd Stop: Ridge Road School, North Haven Public Schools
At first glance…
During my visit to Ridge Road Elementary School, I was truly impressed by our staff’s dedication to fostering meaningful connections with our youth through “emotional check-ins.” It was inspiring to see students fully engaged, eager to share their feelings with both staff and friends. Our team took the time to listen attentively, offering support and validation to each child, creating a space where every emotion was acknowledged and valued.
A deeper connection…
Emotional check-ins with young people in after-school programs are vital for their well-being and personal growth. These conversations provide a safe space for youth to express their feelings, share concerns, and build trusting relationships with mentors. By regularly checking in, staff can gain insight into what young people are experiencing—whether it’s stress, challenges at home or school, or struggles with self-esteem. These discussions can serve as early interventions, helping to prevent future trauma by addressing emotional needs before they escalate. They also offer opportunities to discover students’ interests, strengths, and aspirations, allowing staff to encourage personal and academic development.
