Reflections from the 2025 National Conference for Boys & Girls Clubs of America
This past May 2025, I had the opportunity to travel to San Diego, California, for the 2025 National Conference for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). As I arrived in San Diego, I was immediately struck by how the city had embraced this national organization. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I saw BGCA branding everywhere: throughout the airport, along the roads to the hotel, and prominently displayed inside the hotel itself. The visual graphics and the sea of more than 2,000 attendees were powerful affirmations that BGCA is not only alive but thriving.
I was in my element. I am inspired to be a small part of this meaningful youth development organization. Our leadership was present, not just in San Diego, but symbolically present across the country through the dedication and enthusiasm of those in attendance.
Prior to joining the organization as CEO, I had done extensive research on BGCA and learned about the hundreds of chartered Boys & Girls Clubs across the United States and on military bases. There is an overwhelming energy, commitment, and scale that makes this organization a movement.
That’s what we are….a movement! Just think about the sheer number of staff, board members, volunteers, and alumni who, for more than a century, have dedicated themselves to our mission. We are a powerful, unified force making a lasting impact on the youth of our nation. I cannot tell you how many people I meet, almost daily, who tell me proudly, “I am a Club kid!”
In fact, there is a powerful network of Club kids, alumni of the Boys & Girls Clubs, right here in Greater New Haven! We will be inviting all alumni to reconnect with our clubs… stay tuned!
On a national scale, BGCA’s impact is impressive. BGCA CEO, Jim Clark, has shared that together, Boys & Girls Clubs across the country have served a record-breaking 4 million young people! This is a milestone that underscores the vitality, relevance, and reach of our work today.
