Bridging the Digital Divide with NBCUniversal Comcast Partnership

Dec 19, 2024 | Featured, News

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater New Haven is thrilled to partner with NBCUniversal Comcast to deliver innovative programs that enhance digital literacy and promote digital equity for young learners. In today’s increasingly tech-focused world, access to quality digital education is more critical than ever, and this collaboration ensures our youth are prepared to thrive both academically and professionally!

MyFuture: Engaging Elementary Learners

For children in Kindergarten through 5th grade, BGCGNH offers the MyFuture program, part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Digital Literacy Essentials initiative. This online curriculum provides young learners with engaging, hands-on experiences to develop technological skills and navigate the digital world confidently.

Through MyFuture, students explore topics such as digital literacy, computer science, and media creation. Participants also earn certifications as they progress, showcasing their growing expertise. The program introduces robotics to elementary students using LEGO BricQ Motion kits, offering an exciting way to learn problem-solving and creative thinking while exploring basic engineering concepts.

Robotics for Middle Schoolers

For middle school students in grades 6 through 8, BGCGNH offers a dedicated Robotics Program designed to teach advanced problem-solving, coding, and collaboration. Each week, participants spend two hours engaged in designing, building, and programming robots. One hour is devoted to construction and exploration, while the other focuses on developing coding skills.

This program goes beyond technical knowledge. It fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and time management—valuable skills that benefit students in school and future careers. By engaging in robotics, youth learn to tinker, explore, and create in a way that makes STEM education both fun and meaningful.

Closing the Digital Divide

Digital equity is at the heart of BGCGNH’s mission to serve youth. For many children, access to reliable internet and digital tools can be limited. According to a 2020 report by Dalio, 57,000 households with children in Connecticut lack reliable internet access—a barrier that can hinder academic success and digital skill development.

By providing engaging programs like MyFuture and Robotics, BGCGNH ensures every young person has the opportunity to develop the digital skills they need, regardless of their circumstances. Our programs offer equitable access to tools and mentorship, closing gaps in digital literacy that affect countless families.

A Grateful Partnership

NBCUniversal Comcast’s support has been instrumental in addressing this issue, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater New Haven are deeply grateful for their continued support.  Together, we’re providing essential resources and opportunities that allow every young person to explore, innovate, and thrive in today’s digital world!
